Image Swirl-logoGoogle labs has released a new image search feature named as Google Image Swirl. This is a new image search engine with some cool features. Image Swirl introduces a Wonder Wheel like user interface for Google Images.

When user enters the search query it returns the found images combined into groups. Each group consists of photos with similar characteristics in color, contrast and distribution of elements.

When you click on any group thumbnail it opens a wheel with the other pictures found, allowing navigating between them visually.

Image Swirl expands on technologies developed for Similar Images and Picasa Face Recognition to discern how images should be grouped together and build hierarchies out of these groups. Each thumbnail on the initial results page represents an algorithmically-determined representative group of images with similar appearance and meaning. These aren’t just the most relevant images — they are the most relevant groups of images.
